so i am "creative" in a fake sort of way. i love crafts and can pretty much copy anything i see. i get a good idea from a blog here and there and think, "i can make/do that" and usually i can. but *this* was all me, lovelies! i'm growing up!
so anna knows i love to make sugar cookies. my sister makes these wonderful ones that are so soft and delicious and, best of all, do not need to be refrigerated before cutting (which i hate doing and used to be the reason i never made sugar cookies). i love her sugar cookies, you can find the link to them here. and really, i call them "her" sugar cookies because *no one* makes them like she makes them. anyway, anna gave me these cookie cutters a while ago and this season i got a little idea in my head that i could make something pretty cute with them. and it worked!
above are the cookie cutters; i cut all six plus the star several times and lined them up thus:
i used the buttercream frosting from her recipe and it's so good to frost, but for the "glue" on the rolos, i would recommend something stronger like the kind of frosting you use on gingerbread houses, whatever that is. i used lots of rolos and some sixlets that kai was more than happy to sort through for the small payment of getting to eat all the not-red-and-green ones. i think mini m&ms would be cuter but i couldn't find any in time. i also used these darling silver decorating balls that my sister has but i steal all the time...there's pics of those on the finished product below. they were my favorite.
frost the big cookie. you can see a shadow under this one because originally i started with a "trunk" of three rolos underneath the whole thing. later when the trees started toppling, i quit with the trunk in favor of a more sturdy bottom. also, i found it easy to frost with the pastry bag but it was probably just as quick to use a knife.
again, with my first few, i put just one rolo on the bottom two cookies, but eventually changed my mind to putting three rolos on in order to keep it sturdy.
this picture below is what i would recommend to place on top of the biggest and second biggest cookies to better balance the whole thing. after the first two cookies, one rolo is enough.
put a dollop of frosting on to hold the next cookie, some decorations, and then repeat. :)
top with a star and you've got a cute Christmas tree!
and with the aforementioned silver decorating sprinkles they look so cute. i think they would be really pretty on white frosting...
wrapped in cellophane, they made a pretty gift for the boys' teachers.
i made a big box for t's office. they were toppling right away and i'm pretty sure they didn't make it to the office whole, but he wouldn't tell me. i got more confident with it and with some adjustments, had a sturdy enough group to bring to my office. they're pretty easy to fix if they do topple, and they only have to last long enough to be broken apart and eaten anyway.
so four batches of the cookie recipe made 20 trees and a ton of the stars. overall, it was a really fun project that i will definitely do again!

Those are SO CUTE! Good job, Cristi! As a teacher I would have loved to receive a sugar cookie tree. I probably would have eaten it within three minutes of getting it.
Ummm...those are ADORABLE!!!!!! You are so creative! And your cookies are just as good if not better than mine! Love them. May have to copy the idea....(maybe next year when I might have more motivation).
