...the talk...

Ahhh, my Kai is a special little man. I love him so much. We had some time together on Sunday, just he and I, and I said to him, "Kai, I need you to know that you can talk to me about anything. Do you have any questions that you want to ask? Is there anything you're curious about or anything that you've heard about that you don't understand?" (this is from my increasingly panicked conviction that our world is getting more and more evil by the second...and that if I don't teach my kid the values I hope he will hold, well, who knows who will? But he didn't need to know the paranoia surrounding my question, he just needs to know that he can talk to his mom :))

Kai: What is "gay"? I mean, what does that even mean?

Mom: [a mildly uncomfortable answer mixing science, politics, culture, religion, and ending with, "I know you think girls are gross right now but that isn't the same thing. You'll actually think girls are pretty cool, probably by fourth grade"]

Kai: I don't think girls are gross, I think girly stuff is gross.

Mom: K, cool. Now, what else are you wondering about?

Kai: Um, how strong is glue?

Mom: Oh, uh, what?

Kai: You know. Glue. How strong is it? Like, could it glue a brick to a tree limb?

[followed by a very long discussion of the different types of glue that I know of and a deliberation of whether epoxy is actually glue or not. Ending with the determination that it is.]

That's too funny! What a good mom you are to teach and talk to him about everything. :) (That first question would be difficult to answer now that I am thinking about it!)
