an exercise in futility...
MOM - no comments on this one, ok? I am not complaining about my lack of international/cultural/ethnic/whatever knowledge. I actually feel quite secure in that knowledge, partly due to the number of years it took to get a degree in that field. This post is simply the ramblings of a crazy World Fest planner, mainly written for the enjoyment of past World Fest planners and the ones who got out of it this year for some random "I'm going on a mission" or "I had a baby" or "I work for an even crazier department now" excuse. (you have to read her blog - it is hilarious)
But back to my intended ramblings...and someday I'll explain the craziness that is World Fest. But not until I am either the Department Director and merely have to take credit for its success, or until we run out of money to do it and it is just a still-traumatizing thing of the past.
HAHAHAHAHA this year's World Fest is going to be great and I will tell you why. The other day, I got a volunteer for my entertainment extravaganza. My thoughts went something like this: "Oh, great! We didn't have Russia represented, perfect!" So I wrote the student to clarify whether he would model traditional Russian dress or perform a talent. He wrote back that he doesn't have traditional Russian dress, and "anyway, it is a Latin dance I will be performing."
Huh?
"Ok, great Dmitry! can you send some details?"
"Sure! it's a dance i made up myself."
Turns out, it's a LATIN JIVE BALLROOM dance. No, really. And no, I do not know what that means. What the heck is a Latin jive ballroom dance?
Sweet Dmitry. Thanks for keeping the Extravganza real. I cannot wait to see your dance. Maybe while we're at it, we could combine the Spanish Flamenco and Samoan Siva dancers. And you could wear a Vietnamese Ao Dai while you jive.
Oh, and tickets are finally on sale - you know you have to see the show now.
finally, i must post this from my favorite website failblog. Dmitry is the mariachi guy in the middle. :)
